What is MCAP Chicago?

Comprehensive, unbiased, expert assessment of the mind and body.

The Multidisciplinary Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) accurately diagnoses emotional, behavioral, addictive, and developmental disorders in adults. Our highly reliable evaluation program depends on evidence-based methodology provided by board-certified psychiatrists, addiction medicine specialists, and clinicians with specialized training in behavioral health. By looking at the full picture, we provide the answers that individuals and referring entities need.

Why is a comprehensive assessment necessary?

Addictive and psychiatric disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, stress-related disorders, substance use disorders, and eating disorders often co-occur. Symptoms can overlap or mimic one another, creating a complex clinical picture. Other medical conditions - ranging from endocrine to neurological problems - may also impact behavior or be at the root of psychiatric symptoms. MCAP Chicago looks at all factors contributing to physical health and psychological well-being.

  • Past, current, chronic, and acute sources of stress.

  • Mental health/psychiatric conditions.

  • Physical conditions such as pain disorders and neurological issues.

  • Genetic, social, cognitive, emotional, familial, and spiritual health.

Through our expert, objective assessment, individuals receive the most accurate diagnosis and recommendations on appropriate next steps, including whether and what type of treatment is needed.

Disorders We Evaluate

  • Addictive Disorders

Many people's drug problem started with a well-meaning prescription painkiller for an injury or pain condition. Another common issue we encounter is professionals with stressful, high responsibility jobs turning to alcohol and drugs to relieve stress. Some individuals are also dealing with behavioral addictions, such as gambling, pornography and hypersexual disorder which lead them to compulsively engage in behavior despite the negative impact on their life and those they love. Our team is experienced in assessing all types of behavioral addictions.

  • Psychiatric Disorders

Our board-certified psychiatrists have clinical expertise in mood disorders (i.e., anxiety and depression), personality disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, ADHD, panic disorder, adjustment disorders, and the inherent nuances of how co-occurring disorders interact.

  • Neurocognitive Disorders

Neurocognitive disorders affect learning, memory, and perception. Neurocognitive disorders may be caused by substance abuse, neurological issues, or other chronic conditions. MCAP Chicago incorporates neurocognitive and psychological testing to determine if there is cognitive impairment, the level of impairment, and the cause. Imaging studies and consultations with additional specialists may be recommended as needed.

  • Medical Conditions

There are many medical conditions that can impact thought processes and behavior. MCAP Chicago has a board-certified internal medicine physician on staff who conducts physical exams. When complex issues are uncovered, we also arrange consultations with a full range of specialists at Northwestern Medicine System when needed.
